During November 7-22, 2023, UNESCO held the 42nd session of general conference in Paris, France and approved the proposal raised by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) to celebrate the anniversary of birth of Chinese ancient mathematician Liu Hui.
This is the first time China has successfully applied for a birthday anniversary event for a scientist at UNESCO, and has received great support from Azerbaijan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).
Traditional Chinese mathematics is one of the most developed basic scientific disciplines in ancient China, and it is also an important component of ancient mathematics in the world.
As one of the founders of classical Chinese mathematical theory, Liu Hui made great contributions in the history of Chinese mathematics and also gained an important position in the history of world mathematics.
His masterpiece Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art had great influence on a large number of mathematicians and mathematical works in later generations.
The anniversary celebration is planned to be jointly held in China, France, and other places from 2024 to 2025, and mathematicians from multiple countries and regions around the world are invited to participate.
The event is conducive to communicating achievements of ancient Chinese mathematicians, and promoting the exchange and mutual learning of world civilizations.
