The World Conference on Science Literacy (WCSL) 2019 kicked off in Beijing on October 16, 2019.
Themed "Science Literacy for Sustainable Development", the conference was sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), with support from the UNESCO, the International Science Council (ISC) and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO).
Over 600 Chinese and international guests from five international organizations, 28 countries and 35 national science organizations took part in the event.

CAST president Wan Gang, WFEO president-elect Gong Ke, and UNESCO representative Marielza Oliveira addressed the opening ceremony, which was presided over by Meng Qinghai, CAST vice president and vice director of the event's organizing committee.
Daya Reddy, ISC president and professor of the University of Cape Town; Fu Bojie, vice president of both the International Geographical Union and the International Association for Ecology; Huai Jinpeng, executive vice president of CAST, Erik Jacquemyn, chair of the Science Centre World Summit Foundation; and Colin Blakemore, fellow of the Royal Society of UK, delivered keynote speeches at the opening ceremony.
Following the spirit of the Beijing Declaration, an outcome document from WCSL 2018, this year's edition consists of a series of activities including the opening ceremony, keynote speeches, plenary forums, thematic sessions, roundtables, field visits and the closing ceremony, and aims to push ahead the building of world science literacy organizations and a global science literacy community, thereby making new contributions to the sustainable development of the world and the progress of human civilizations.
