Song Jun, executive secretary of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.
Song, together with Yang Dan, president of the Southwest Jiaotong University attended the unveiled session of the event.
Zhou Zhongrong, vice president of the Southwest Jiaotong University, delivered a speech on the spot.
Martin Woesler, president of the German China Association, Marc Guigon, director of the Passenger Department of the International Union of Railways (UIC), and Zhuang Xinyi (Malaysia), senior project officer for sustainable transport of the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), delivered video speeches respectively.
Song said that it is in urgent need to strengthen cooperation in science and technology on a global scale facing current changes and challenges.
He introduced that CAST has initiated the project of B&R international sci-tech organizations cooperation platforms since 2016 to promote people-to-people exchanges among China and other countries in the fields of science, technology, industry and economy.
He hoped the CAST- supported joint research center program could set off from a high starting point and serve as a benchmark of think tanks to promote non-governmental scientific and technological exchanges.
He advocated to give full play to the advantages of all parties to promote the integrated development of production, education and research to boost the high-quality development of the humanity exchanges in the B&R region.
Zhou briefed the attendees that the Southwest Jiaotong University has established complete systems of discipline, personnel training and scientific research in the field of rail transport in the world.
The co-founded research center with the UIC and the German international ecological transport union will prove to be a strong alliance for cooperation.
He said that under the guidance of CAST, the university will join hands with the co-founders to incorporate the construction of the research center into the overall planning for scientific research of the university.
He added that the university will focus on cultivating high-quality talents and promoting the system and certification standards of engineering and scientific evaluation in China as well to create favorable conditions for regional sci-tech integration and make contributions to the B&R Initiative.
Woesler said that the German China Association is committed to people-to-people exchanges between China and Germany, and it will help promote the construction of the research center through conducting personnel training and academic exchange activities between the two sides.
Guigon said that the UIC is willing to work with the research center to cultivate talents on rail transport to boost the facility connectivity in the B&R region.
Zhuang said that as the largest local sustainable development cooperation network in the world, the ICLEI will work with the German union in the field of green transport to cooperate with the research center to realize UN sustainable development goals.
After the inauguration ceremony, Song Jun went to the History Museum to pay his respects to the older generation of scientists graduated from the university, represented by Mao Yisheng, Zhu Kezhen and Zhang Wei.
Leading officials from the Department of International Affairs of CAST and the Southwest Jiaotong University attended the events.
