Li Qiang, secretary of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Huai Jinpeng, executive vice president and chief executive secretary of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and Roger Kornberg, chairman of the World Laureate Association (WLA) and 2006 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry addressed the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Gong Zheng, deputy secretary of the Shanghai Committee of the CPC and mayor of Shanghai Municipal People's Government.
Huai Jinpeng said that President Xi Jinping's video speech points out the direction for deepening international sci-tech cooperation and advancing the development of world science, adding that world laureates are beacons of wisdom, messengers of civilization and pioneers of cooperation.
They explore the unknown fields, foresee the future, lead the forefronts with inspiring sci-tech achievements. They also show the young generation a road of rationality and humility and a direction of insight and virtue, acclaimed Huai.
While noting that the forum is a platform connects sci-tech circles with a common value of solidarity and cooperation across the globe, Huai pointed out that the world is facing a new round of sci-tech revolution and industrial transformation, and the COVID-19 pandemic is spreading while the economic globalization encountering reverse currents.
Huai stressed that there are urgent needs for world's sci-tech circles to join hands to shape open science. He hoped the forum plays its full role attracting talents and making solidarity a strength. He called on the attendees to participate in global governance system with an open attitude. He urged a people-oriented sci-tech community to be built to convince man with rationality and morality.
He said that CAST will join hands with Shanghai and the WLA to build the forum a platform for mutual trust and win-win results, so as to contribute to the sustainable development of the world and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

The launching ceremony of the World Laureates Forum Foundation and the WLA Scientific Community was held at the opening ceremony.
Roger Kornberg, Michael Levitt, Yao Qizhi, Wang Yifang, and Xie Xiaoliang jointly launched the cloud stationing ceremony of WLA Joint Laboratory for International Cooperation.
Six members of the executive committee of the WLA including Roger Kornberg, Steve Chu, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Ryoji Noyori, Michael Levitt and Randy W. Sheckman jointly voiced the vision, mission and tasks of the WLA.
The World Laureates Forum (WLF) was initiated by the WLA , sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and guided by CAST.
Taking "Science and Technology, for the common destiny of mankind" as the eternal theme, the forum endeavors to build up a platform of sci-tech innovation with international influence.
This year's forum was held both online and offline, attracting more than 300 scientists including 61 Nobel laureates to participate.
CAST mobilized more than 100 member societies to take part in the event, and selected more than 50 young S&T talents nationwide to participate in the WLF Sci-T Conference competition.
Huai Jinpeng held seminars with world laureates and young S&T talents respectively at the forum.
Song Jun, executive secretary of CAST, together with leading officials from the General Office, the Children & Youth Science Center (CYSC) and the China Center for International Science and Technology Exchange (CISTE) of CAST attended the forum.
