On May 30, 2020, the fourth National Science and Technology Workers Day, the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) held a symposium to study the guiding principles of President Xi Jinping’s reply to a letter by 25 representatives of science and technology workers on May 29.

Wan Gang, vice chairman of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and president of CAST, read Xi’s reply letter at the symposium and delivered a speech.
Huai Jinpeng, executive vice president of CAST, hosted the symposium.
Scientists and technologists attending the symposium shared their views on how to put the spirit of Xi’s reply in place from the perspectives of their respective fields.
Key speakers included Ye Peijian, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and researcher of the China Academy of Space Technology; Xue Qikun, member of CAS and vice president of Tsinghua University; Li Lanjuan, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and director of the State Key Laboratory of Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases in the First Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University; Huang Luqi, member of CAE and president of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences; Chen Wei, member of CAE and researcher of the Institute of Military Medicine under the Academy of Military Sciences; Tan Xuguang, president of Shandong Heavy Industry Group; Wu Yansheng, president of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation; Fan Huitao, member of CAE and deputy director of science and technology with Aviation Industry Corporation of China; Gong Jinlong, professor and vice president of Tianjin University; Wang Haifeng, chief technology officer of Baidu; Fu Yingbo, president of Beijing Kuangshi Technology Co., Ltd.; Hai Xingshuo, representative of Chinese college students and doctoral student of School of Reliability and Systems Engineering, Beihang University.
They all agreed that the reply letter fully showed the care of General Secretary Xi Jinping and the CPC Central Committee for science and technology workers and would inspire them to forge ahead in the journey of exploration and innovation.
In addition, they put forward opinions and suggestions on how to give science and technology a bigger role in building a modern economic system and guiding high-quality development and pledged to make a greater contribution to building China into a world power in science and technology.
Academician Shi Yigong, vice president of CAST and president of Westlake University, read a proposal entitled "Keep Missions in Mind and Make Achievements Through Innovation and Creativity" on behalf of Chinese science and technology workers.
Also joining the symposium were Wang Xi, vice Chinese minister of science and technology and vice president of CAST; He Huawu, vice president of CAE and CAST; Chen Zuoning, vice president of CAE and CAST; all members of the Leading Party Members’ Group and Secretariat of CAST; representatives of the winners of the second National Award for Excellence in Innovation; representatives of the science and technology workers involved in the building of CAST’s Technological Innovation China brand; representatives of youth science and technology workers; and representatives of college students, bringing the total number of attendees to 120.
