The China Association for science and technology (CAST) held a seminar on major issues of basic sciences on July 10, 2020.
Huai Jinpeng, executive vice president and chief executive secretary of CAST presided over the seminar. Shu Wei and Lyu Zhaoping, both are executive secretaries of CAST attended the seminar.
Tian Gang, president of the Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS) and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Sun Changpu, vice president of the Chinese Physical Society (CPS) and academician of the CAS, Liu Zhongfan, vice president of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) and academician of the CAS, Fang Daining, president of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM) and academician of the CAS, Chong Kang, president of the Botanical Society of China (BSC) and academician of the CAS, Chen yeguang, president of the Chinese Society for Cell Biology (CSCB) and academician of the CAS, Wei Fuwen, vice president and secretary general of the China Zoological Society (CZS) and academician of the CAS, Ren Xiaomin, vice president of the Chinese Optical Society (COS), Zou Yongliao, vice president of the Chinese Society of Space Research (CSSR), Wang Pengfei, vice president of the Chinese Society for Imaging Science and Technology (CSIST), and Guo Jian, secretary general of the Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS), attended the seminar.
Tian Gang and Chen Yeguang made thematic reports on the development trend of mathematics and life science, frontiers in science, major scientific problems and China's development status and relevant suggestions respectively.
Experts attending the seminar conducted in-depth discussions on issues about strategic layout of China's basic science, research frontiers, system and mechanism innovation, cultivation of talents and scientific spirit, and put forward suggestions on issues relating to setting major research projects of basic science, promoting sci-tech system and mechanism innovation and training leading scientists as well.
Huai conveyed the latest instructions of a leading official of the CPC central committee on the development of basic science in China.
While noting that conducting basic scientific research is an essential contributor for China to become a world power in science and technology, Huai stressed that it is very important for accelerating enhancement of capability of independent innovation to identify major scientific problems and their research priority levels according to the situation.
CAST and its affiliated organizations would fully implement the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important instructions and the deployment of the State Council, and set off from CAST's newly released brand programme “Innovation China” to explore the organization and mechanism innovation to promote the deep integration of science, technology and economy, added Huai.
Huai urged the attendees to provide better services to the national academic societies to solve major scientific, technological and engineering problems by means of deepening international exchanges and cooperation, cultivating leading talents, promoting sci-tech system reform and creating a favorable condition for science advancement.
Huai also expressed his hope that all national academic societies would pool the wisdom of Chinese sci-tech workers together and conduct in-depth research on the major problems facing basic science in China, thus giving full play to the academic societies' function as think tanks and providing consultative advices to China's 14th five-year plan and medium and long-term S&T development plan.
Representatives who are responsible for CAST's functioning departments of the General Office, Department of Organization and Personnel, Department of Research and Publicity, Department of Academic Societies Affairs and CAST's affiliated institution of Service Center for Societies attended the seminar.
