On May 7, 2021, the inauguration meeting of the “Commission of Molecular Photonics & Excited State Chemistry, Chinese Chemical Society” was officially held online, with more than 50 representatives from universities and research institutes participating in the ceremony.
The director of ICCAS Deqing Zhang attended the inauguration meeting and expressed his congratulations. Secretary-General of CCS Qinghua Fan attended the meeting and delivered a speech. He pointed out: As a branch of the Chinese Chemical Society, the Commission plays an important role in the society. The newly established Commission will lead the rapid development of molecular photonics and excited state chemistry in China, and provide a new platform for the society on academic exchanges, international cooperation, scientific popularization, and further-education.
During the inauguration meeting, Prof. Jiannian Yao (Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences) was elected as the first chairman of the commission. Prof. He Tian (East China University of Science and Technology) and Prof. Jincai Zhao (Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences) were elected as the vice-chairmen. Proposed by the chairman Yao, Prof. Chuang Zhang (Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Prof. Xi Wang (Beijing Jiaotong University) were appointed the secretaries of the commission.
After the election, Chairman Jiannian Yao proposed the work plan of the commission to the commission members. Yao said: Chemistry is moving step by step from “ground state” to “excited state”. The commission will focus on the commission members’ responsibilities, the academic exchange/cooperation, as well as the talent young scholars. Especially considering the interdisciplinary research background of our members, we will combine multiple state-of-art characterization techniques to reveal the nature of “excited state”. It will guide the design of new materials and the development of new chemical reactions. Meanwhile, emphasizing the integration of industry-teaching-research may offer entirely new strategies to display technology, industrial catalysis and other practical applications. All of the commission members should work together to promote the future development of molecular photonics and excited state chemistry. After that, the advisory committee, including Prof. Yong Cao, Prof. Kuiling Ding, Prof. Weihai Fang, Prof. Lizhu Wu, Prof. Yuliang Zhao, discussed and gave suggestions on the development of the commission in terms of combing theoretical studies with experiments, emphasizing “chemistry” as the central science, developing advanced characterization methods of spectroscopies, taking advantages of large scientific apparatus, and so on. Many of the commission members discussed the work plan and presented their suggestions. At last, the vice-chairman He Tian said that the commission will work on the expansion of the research community on excited state chemistry by enforcing the education of graduate students in professional knowledge and skills; the vice-chairman Jincai Zhao said the commission will engage in a variety of activities related to national policies for science and technology to provide suggestions for the development of chemistry in China.
The founding of the Commission of Molecular Photonics & Excited State Chemistry was approved during the CCS Standing Board Meeting, with the same term to the current CCS Board until 2022.
