Wan Gang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Hou Jianguo, secretary of the leading Party members group and president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Wang Chen, member of the leading Party members group and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Li Yunze, member of the Standing Committee of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and executive vice governor of Sichuan Province, Wang Fengchao, deputy secretary of the CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee and Mayor of Chengdu, Dr. Shamila Nair Bedouelle, assistant director general for natural sciences of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Gong Ke, former president of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and other heads attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches respectively.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhang Guihua, member of the leading Party Leadership Group and executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST.
Wan Gang pointed out in his speech that under the context of world development and historical orientation of China in the new era, the Report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) elaborated on the important features of Chinese modernization, and developed integrated deployment and approaches to implement the strategy of invigorating China through science and education, quality workforce building and innovation-driven development.
While noting that China's sci-tech community has always been an advocate of open global cooperation, a participant in sci-tech governance, and a contributor to innovative development, Wan expressed his expectation that global sci-tech community will build a new ecology of integrity and innovation, cultivate new momentum for cross-border integration, and share open cooperation in the new era to make greater contributions to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
The keynote speeches session of the opening ceremony was presided over by Deng Jianjun, vice president of the Sichuan Association for Science and Technology (SAST) and academician of the CAE.
Christopher Pissarides, 2010 Nobel laureate in economics and regius professor of economics at the London School of Economics, Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel laureate in peace, economist and founder of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, Yang Jie, Party secretary and chair of China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd., Wang Chen, academician and vice president of the CAE, Professor Paul Anastas, director of the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering of Yale University, and Li Desheng, deputy director of China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda, delivered respective keynote speeches on 3 major topics: "Development priorities -- S&T promoting development of human society", "People-oriented approaches -- S&T improving people's livelihood", and "Inclusiveness -- green innovation and sustainable development".
The high-end dialogue session was presided over by Li Yanrong, president of SAST, president of Sichuan University and academician of the CAE.
Chen Xuedong, vice president of CAST, vice president of China National Machinery Industry Corporation (Sinomach) and academician of the CAE, Tang Lixin, vice president of Northeastern University and academician of the CAE, Richard Charles Horton, editor-in -chief of The Lancet supported by Elsevier, Gerd Leonhard, futurist and author of Technology vs. Humanity -- The Coming Clash between Man and Machine, and Ren Fuji, professor of the University of Tokushima, academician of the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ), had fantastic dialogue around the topic of "Action-oriented approaches -- sci-tech innovation facing global challenges".
The WSTDF 2022 was co-sponsored by CAST, the CAS, the CAE and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government, organized by the Chengdu Municipal People's Government, and supported by UNESCO, the International Science Council (ISC) and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO).
With the theme of "Openness, Trust, and Cooperation", the forum consisted of 5 sections: World commonwealth, Digital reality, Development for the better, S&T for public’s good, and Future ahead.
The forum embodied main forum and 17 sub forums including the World Digital Economy Forum, delivered in a hybrid form of online and on spot.
More than 300 top experts and scholars from government departments, scientific research institutes, universities, enterprises, sci-tech organizations and other institutions from more than 20 countries and regions participated in the forum, including 7 Nobel Prize winners, 1 Turing Prize winner, and more than 60 academicians at home and abroad.
The forum lasted until November 28. At the closing ceremony, Top 10 scientific issues critical to human society in 2022, Basic science for sustainable development initiative", and "Top 10 emerging technologies in Chemistry in 2022" among other important achievements were released.
