During the just concluded May Day holiday, various popular science bases in Changxing county of Huzhou city in Zhejiang province became hotspots of leisure for local people.

According to statistics, in Changxing County, more than 200,000 primary and secondary school students punched in various popular science bases with their parents during the May Day holiday.

Get close to nature and explore the charm of science

Xianshan Lake National Wetland Park, one of the national popular science education bases located in Changxing county launched a special popular science program namely "Caring for wetlands".

The research program provided opportunity for the participating teenagers to observe inconspicuous wetland animals and plants, arousing their attention to details, and getting them feel the magic of nature.

With vivid examples, the base publicized its construction concept, laws and regulations of wetland protection and other relevant popular science knowledge which were conducive to enhancing the awareness of the teenagers to protect wetlands and practice low-carbon life style.

Learn traditional Chinese medicine and feel Chinese culture

In the Shennong Park of Meishan primary school, one of Zhejiang’s provincial academician science education bases, traditional Chinese medicine pharmacist introduced the visiting students the knowledge about forms and efficacies of various traditional Chinese medicines.

The visiting students put on traditional Chinese clothes and cooked cool mint tea suitable for summer drinking.

By promoting brand programs of traditional Chinese medicine and culture, the Shennong Park science education base made teenagers feel the breadth and depth of Chinese culture.

Experience fun of farming and labor

In the Museum of Taihu agricultural culture park, one of the province’s science education bases, the teenagers acquired knowledge about the origin and development of agricultural culture and learned Chinese traditional culture from the detailed explanation of sci-tech volunteers.

After the observing and learning session, the participating children began to experience farming work on the Happy Farm of the base. They planted beans, dug earthworms, grinded corns, and used grain blower, feeling the fun of labor in the special May Day holiday.

Take care of your eyes and polish the window of your heart

Aier Ophthalmology center, a municipal popular science education base, launched a series of popular science activities for young people to acquire knowledge of prevention and control of myopia.

Aier science education base elaborated the participating families a role-acting program of patients seeing ophthalmologist, and provided free eye examination services and delivered lectures as well to help the youngsters to know how to develop good habits to protect their eyes.

More than 30 popular science education bases in Changxing County have carried out various popular science activities during the 5-day May Day holiday, providing thoughtful after-school science education services to enhance scientific literacy of the local youngsters in line with the Chinese authorities’ guidelines released last year to ease the burden of excessive homework and off-campus tutoring for students undergoing compulsory education.
