On April 15, 2022, the Chinese Chemical Society held the Online Summit on Celebrating the 3rd Anniversary of CCS Chemistry, with the theme of “Dialogue: Chemistry, Molecular Medicine and Life Health”. Associate Editor of CCS Chemistry, Prof. Weihong Tan, organized the Summit, and Prof. Yi Lu from the University of Texas at Austin, and Prof. Peng Chen from Peking University were invited. The three experts shared their scientific research achievements and thoughts in the field of chemistry, life, and health.
Prof. Xi Zhang, Executive Editor-in-Chief of CCS Chemistry, President of Jilin University, and Professor of Tsinghua University, delivered an opening speech. Prof. Zhang expressed his sincere thanks to the authors, readers, and reviewers at home and abroad who have given CCS Chemistry continuous attention, support, and help over the past three years, and hoped to make joint efforts with colleagues at home and abroad to make CCS Chemistry a first-class international journal as well as an academic platform for sharing revolutionary chemistry results. Dr. Donna Minton, Publishing Director of the Chinese Chemical Society, introduced the basic situation and achievements of CCS Chemistry since its launching three years ago.
During the following session, Prof. Peng Chen gave a lecture with the title “Chemistry in Living Cells”, which gave a vivid overview of the scientific development process and strategies of chemical biology research using chemical reactions, and presented a series of achievements achieved by his research group in the “in situ” study of biological macromolecules such as proteins in vivo. Prof. Yi Lu gave a lecture with the title “New Progress and Application of Functional DNA Nanotechnology in Medical Diagnosis, Imaging and Gene Editing”, which introduced the latest research in the use of DNA functional nanotechnology for the diagnosis of SARS-Cov-2 and the pathogenic mechanism of Alzheimer’s disease. Prof. Weihong Tan gave a lecture with the title “Digital Protein Molecular Atlas of a Single Cancer Cell”, which introduced how to understand the importance and necessity of the development of the human body and molecular medicine at the molecular level, as well as a series of achievements for modern disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
In the interview session, Prof. Xi Zhang, Prof. Weihong Tan, Prof. Yi Lu, and Prof. Peng Chen gave some suggestions for some common concerns of chemists, including “how to make better use of artificial intelligence, algorithms, big data, and other technologies to integrate with chemical biology to help us better realize the development of life sciences?”, “how do young chemical scientists find the direction they are ultimately willing to strive for life?”, “whether scientific research should emphasize original innovation, like from 0 to 1, or should make a field deep and thorough, like digging a well?”.
