Li Keqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and premier of the State Council, sent a congratulatory letter to the congress.
Cai Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the Beijing municipal CPC committee, announced the convening of the congress.
Wan Gang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and chairman of the WNEVC, delivered a keynote speech.
Yin Yong, deputy secretary of the Beijing municipal Party committee, and Xin Guobin, deputy minister of industry and information technology, addressed the opening ceremony.
Feng Fei, deputy secretary of the Hainan provincial Party committee and governor of Hainan province, Mr. Achim Steiner, administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and Prof. Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF) delivered congratulatory video clips to the congress respectively.
Zhang Yuzhuo, secretary of the leading Party members group, vice president in charge of daily work and chief executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST presided over the opening ceremony.
While noting that global NEV industry has made remarkable achievements and become a new engine of economic growth, Wan Gang remarked that NEV industry is facing new challenges and in great necessity to embrace passengers-centered development philosophy and expand its market share.
Wan urged to accelerate the construction of a new development pattern which is conducive for more commercial vehicles to use hydrogen fuel cells and build a new vehicle energy system to empower electric travel with intelligent network under the vision of carbon peak and neutrality.
Wan stressed to strengthen global cooperation to build a sustainable automobile industry and supply chain and intensify efforts to coordinate carbon emission policies and standard of different countries to build a new environment to develop global automobile industry in a green, low-carbon and sustainable approach.
Yin Yong said that Beijing will take the development of NEVs as a strategic choice to build the city’s high-tech and fore-front economic structure and achieve carbon peak and neutrality target.
Yin added that Beijing will strengthen the leading role of demands, optimize the environment for development of enterprises and make breakthroughs on core technologies in key fields to build the city a new highland for global NEV industry.
Feng Fei said that Hainan will take the development of NEVs as a landmark program to build itself a national ecological civilization pilot province. Focusing on the goal of stopping selling fuel vehicles by 2030, Hainan will implement medium and long-term action plans to boost NEV industry and expand opening-up and cooperation to share the opportunities and achievements of Hainan as a free trade port.
Xin Guobin said that in compliance with transformation trend of automobile industry, China promoted technological innovation, promotion and application and strengthened infrastructure construction in an all-round way. Next, China will deepen international cooperation to develop NEV industry in the direction of electrified, networked and intelligent vehicles to achieve a stronger, greener and healthier NEV worldwide.
Jin Wei, member of the Standing Committee of the Beijing municipal Party committee and vice mayor of Beijing, Zhao Lei, member of the Standing Committee and secretary general of the Beijing municipal Party committee, and Hou Maofeng, vice chairman of Hainan provincial CPPCC, attended the congress online.
At the congress, Zhu Huarong, chairman of Chongqing Changan Auto Co., Ltd., Stefan Mecha, CEO of Volkswagen passengers in China and head of sales of Volkswagen Group (China), Meng Zhenping, chairman of China Southern Power Grid, Chen Hong, chairman of SAIC Motor Corporation Ltd., Liu Yigong, vice president of China FAW Group Co., Ltd., Oliver Zipse, chairman of the board of management of BMW Group, Zeng Yuqun, founder, chairman and president of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), and other enterprise representatives made presentations around comprehensive electrification and green and low-carbon transformation of automobile industry.
During the congress, the consensus of the WNEVC 2022 was reached by all circles of politics, industry, education and research, and the final list of "2022 global NEV frontier and innovative technologies" was released.
The congress was co-sponsored by CAST, The People's Government of Beijing Municipality, The People's Government of Hainan Province, Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Ministry of Transport, State Administration for Market Regulation and National Energy Administration, and was organized by China Society of Automotive Engineers (CSAE), China think tank on electric vehicles, China Center for International Science and Technology Exchange (CISTE), administrative committee of Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area, Hainan provincial department of industry and information technology, Hainan Association for Science and Technology and People’s Government of Haikou Municipality, and was jointly held in Beijing and Hainan.
More than 1,500 representatives from 14 countries and regions focused on the theme of "Comprehensive electrification and global cooperation under the vision of carbon neutrality" to exchange views on topics including "commercialization of hydrogen energy and fuel cell vehicles", "comprehensive electrification and green low-carbon transformation", and “cross-border coordination of global industrial chain” in a combination form of both online and on spot.
According to statistics, in 2021, the sales volume of NEVs in major countries across the globe exceeded 6.5 million, of which the sales volume in China reached 3.521 million, accounting for 13.4% of the new car sales in the country. By the end of 2021, the cumulative sales of NEVs in the world exceeded 16 million, with Chinese market accounting for more than 50% of the total.
