World prestigious academic institution Springer Nature announced the book For the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases in BRI Countries, edited by Chinese scholar Yang Weizhong, was among the winning list of this year’s China New Development Awards on August 1, 2022.
The China New Development Awards recognized 10 English-language academic books this year in their efforts to highlight significant research contributions from Chinese scholars in facilitating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Yang Weizhong is vice chairman of the CAST UN Consultative Committee on Life Science and Human Health (CAST-CCLH), and vice president of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association.
In the book, Yang and his research group reviewed the history of cooperation between China and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries, and elaborated their efforts to promote international cooperation in responding to infectious diseases.
Yang and his group expounded typical cases and analyzed 21 major infectious diseases in the BRI countries from perspectives of overall introduction, disease risks and response principles, on basis of which they carried out risk assessment of these diseases and put forward suggestions.
With the aim to promote relevant research and accelerate promotion of the SDGs, Springer Nature initiated China New Development Awards in 2019 to recognize books edited or authored by at least one Chinese scholar and directly linked to one or more of the 17 UN SDGs, covering hot topics across a wide range of disciplines from environmental sciences, pedagogy, medicine, to social sciences, business and economics.
Focusing on helping achieve UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and SDGs, the CAST-CCLH took part in revising health indicators of the SDGs and kept a close eye on the effect of implementing the indicators since the committee was established in August 2006.
The CAST-CCLH also intensified efforts to strengthen ties with the World Health Organization (WHO) and held side event at the General Assembly of the UN to share China's concepts, experiences, technologies and products on public health with world peers.
