The inaugural ceremony of the 9th set of the commemorative stamps of modern Chinese Scientists was held at the China Hall of Science and Technology (CHST) on September 7, 2022.
The 9th set includes 4 stamps painting the portraits of 4 scientists: geologist Liu Dongsheng, physicist Cheng Kaijia, mathematician Wu Wenjun, and agronomist Yuan Longping.
Luo Hui, member of the leading Party members Group of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and Kang Ning, vice president of the China Post Group Corporation Limited (hereinafter referred to as "China Post"), jointly unveiled the commemorative stamps.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Song Yurong, deputy director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of CAST.
In her speech, Luo Hui said that on the eve of the convening of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), CAST and China Post jointly launched the 9th set of commemorative stamps of modern Chinese scientists to lead social civilization with the Spirit of Chinese Scientists and show the world the Chinese style and spirit.
It is an activity that CAST takes to unite the broad masses of Chinese sci-tech professionals to stride confidently and make innovation, added Luo.
While noting that the Spirit of Chinese Scientists in the new era comes down in one continuous line with the great spirit of founding the Party, and is an important part of the Party's revolutionary spirit and the great national spirit as well, Luo commented that the activity is conducive to create a sound social environment of respecting labor, knowledge, talent and creation.
With outstanding achievements, we welcomed the successful convocation of the 20th CPC National Congress.
Luo expected the broad masses of Chinese sci-tech professionals should bear in mind the instructions of President Xi Jinping and inherit the fine tradition of Chinese sci-tech circles to promote the Spirit of Chinese Scientists in the new era, i.e. being patriotic and innovative, being dedicated to solving practical problems and seeking truth through unrelenting efforts, upholding the teamwork spirit and cooperative with peer workers, and cultivating and inspiring the young generation of scientists as well, to be vanguard in achieving the goal of sci-tech self-reliance and self-strengthening at higher levels.
At the inaugural ceremony, Gu Jun, vice president of the department of postal business of China Post, read out the issuance notice of the set of commemorative stamps.
Song Yurong and Xu Maojun, president of Beijing Branch of China Post, unveiled the first-day envelop of the set of stamps.
Fan Xiaorong, vice president of Beijing Branch of China Post, presented stamp souvenirs to the family members and unit representatives of the 4 selected scientists of the 9th set of stamps.
The program of issuing commemorative stamps of modern Chinese scientists was initiated in 1988, and 9 sets of stamps have been issued so far. A total of 38 modern Chinese scientists, including geologist Li Siguang, meteorologist and geographer Zhu Kezhen, and optician Wang Daheng, have been selected.
The activity was co-sponsored by CAST and China Post, and co-organized by the Department of Publicity and Culture of CAST and Beijing Branch of China Post.
More than 50 people attended the inaugural ceremony, including Cheng Shuyu, daughter of Cheng Kaijia, Wu Tianjiao, son of Wu Wenjun, and Yuan Longxiang, younger brother of Yuan Longping, who were invited as representatives of the selected scientists' families, representatives of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the China Science and Technology Museum (CSTM) and other relevant units, Wang Yusheng, Zhang Li and Luo Xingbo, experts and scholars selecting the candidate scientists, Li Chen, stamp designer and media reporters.
