On the morning of September 24 of 2022 local time, the 110th birth anniversary of Madame Chien-Shiung Wu, a famous Chinese-American physicist, was held at the conference center of the United States Postal Service (USPS). The event was co-sponsored by the Chinese Physical Society (CPS) and the American Physical Society (APS), and hosted by the Nanjing University Alumni Association United States.

Wan Gang said that Madame Chien-Shiung Wu, one of the most outstanding physicists in the 20th century, devoted her life to promoting exchanges and cooperation in science, technology and education between China and the United States.

We should carry forward the spirit of the scientists represented by Madame Wu, and explore the endless frontiers of science unremittingly, said Wan, adding that the sci-tech community should join hands to meet global common challenges, and make due contributions to promoting the sustainable development and protecting the earth – the beautiful homeland for human society.

Wan concluded that CAST is committed to enhancing its openness, mutual trust and cooperation with its world peers and quite ready to work together with them, including, of course, those from the United States to spur mutual learning among civilizations to increase common prosperity and enhance human welfare.

Zhang Jie, professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and president of the CPS, and Jin Yingji, 2024 president-elect of the APS and professor of the University of Chicago, delivered speeches respectively on behalf of the organizers of the two countries.

The CPS sent a delegation headed by Liu Jianglai, a professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, to the United States to participate in the event and read out the remembrance letter from president Wan Gang.

Wang Zhigang, minister of science and technology of China, delivered a video message, and Qin Gang, Chinese ambassador to the United States, sent a remembrance letter of Madame Wu to the event.

Representatives of Nanjing University, Columbia University, Zhejiang University, Princeton University, Harvard University and other universities delivered speeches at the event, and remembrance letters of Madame Wu from Peking University, University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Southeast University and other universities were read out on spot.

Madame Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997) is one of the most outstanding experimental physicists in the world.

She has made outstanding contributions to the field of nuclear physics and won numerous awards.

She has played an important role in promoting the development of contemporary physics and is known as "Mary Curie of China" and "one of the most outstanding female experimental physicists in the world".

She was the first female president in the history of the APS and participated in the Manhattan Project.

Her experimental results helped Prof. Tsung-Dao Lee and Prof. Chen-Ning Franklin Yang win the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics.
