The 2023 Tengchong Scientists Forum opened on December 1, 2023 in Tengchong, Southwest China's Yunnan Province, pooling wisdom on topics including international frontier science, biomedicine, energy materials, the digital economy, and rural revitalization.

Wu Weihua, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Wang Ning, secretary of the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee and director of the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Congress, Luo Hui, member of the leading Party members group and director general of the Department of International Affairs of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), addressed the opening ceremony respectively.

Wang Guangqian, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and academician of the CAS, and Xu Rongkai, former governor of Yunnan Province, attended the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by Wang Yubo, governor of Yunnan Province.

Under the theme of “Science and green development”, the three-day event included sub-forums, dialogues, roundtables, and activities to promote the scientific and humanity exchanges and the utilization of sci-tech achievements.

Two scientists won the inaugural Tengchong Science Award, with each receiving 10 million yuan in prize money. One prize winner was Dennis Lo, a renowned molecular biologist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who is dubbed the "father of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)." The other recipient was Chinese-American Zhang Feng from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who was awarded for his contributions to the CRISPR-Cas genome editing technologies.

During the forum, more than 90 talent introduction programs were signed  and more than 200 talent will be introduced afterwards.

Co-sponsored by the People’s Government of Yunnan Province and CAST, the forum attracted more than 100 academicians, more than 20 presidents of well-known universities from home and abroad, more than 500 experts and scholars, as well as over 300 entrepreneurs and financiers to participate.
