Recently, the Frontier Research Foundation announced the list of winners of its first awarding program of Frontiers Planet Prize. Professor Gu Baojing's team from the College of Environmental & Resource Sciences of Zhejiang University, recommended by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), won the international championship.

On May 22, 2023, Luo Hui, member of the leading Party members group  and director general of the Department of International Affairs of CAST, met with the award-winning team at the China Science and Technology Hall (CSTH).

Luo Hui congratulated Gu Baojing's team and praised the recommendation work of the Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS). She noted that CAST takes serving sci-tech professionals as its founding mission, and advocates for joint efforts to promote basic research, talent cultivation, and science communication. She stressed that it is a major responsibility for CAST to recommend Chinese scientists to corresponding international organizations for the awards commensurate with their contributions.

Guo Jian, vice president and secretary general of the CGS, relevant personnel from the Department of International Affairs and the China Center for International Science and Technology Exchange (CISTE) attended the meeting.

Frontiers Planet Prize was initiated by the Frontier Research Foundation in 2022 to recognize scientific breakthroughs with the greatest potential to maintain Earth's safe boundaries.

Gu and his team were awarded for their scientific finding published in Science in 2021 as a report entitled "Abating ammonia is more cost effective than nitrogen oxides for mitigating PM2.5 air pollution".

The report proposed a nitrogen contribution rate indicator system which quantifies the contribution rate of nitrogen emissions to PM2.5 pollution and its impact on health in different countries and regions worldwide.

The report evaluated the economic costs and financial benefits of reducing PM2.5 pollution and degrading health risks by controlling nitrogen emissions globally which laid a scientific foundation for global PM2.5 pollution control.
