The 8th ASEAN+3 Student Camp & Teacher Workshop for the Gifted in Science opened on January 16, 2017 in Beijing. Yin Hejun, vice minister of science and technology, Shu Wei, executive secretary of the China Association of Science and Technology (CAST) attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Diplomats from Burma, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia and other countries in Beijing attended the opening ceremony, at which Sang Chun Lee, chairman of ASEAN+3 science talent center, Sombounmy Phomtavong, representative of ASEAN Science and Technology Committee, delivered speeches. A total of 92 middle school students and teachers from 14 teams and13 countries and regions participated in the event.
Yin Hejun welcomed all distinguished guests, teachers and students on behalf of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST)and expressed best wishes for the success of the activities. In his speech, he hoped that the young guests would enjoy their week-long stay in China, get to know more about Chinese history, culture and people, learn more of the stories about Chinese science , and experience the rapid development of science and technology of China while achieving progress and friendship through exchanges, innovation learning from each other.
Shu Wei said that over years CAST had always attached great importance to and actively supported the international exchanges and cooperation in youth science education. He hoped to take the advantage of this event to build a bridge of friendship and mutual exchanges for young people from the countries in the region under the framework of ASEAN+3, and contribute to the development of science education in the region and pass on their friendship and cooperation from generation to generation.
With the theme of "Dreamer, Thinker, Maker", the event was co-sponsored by department of international cooperation of MOST and department of international affairs of CAST, and organized by the Children and Youth Science Center of CAST (CYSCC), China Association of Children’s Science Instructors (CACSI) and Beijing No.35 High School, and supported by ASEAN Secretariat ASEAN+3 science talent center.
During the event, the campers will be working on bridge and model airplane design and production, soccer robot debugging, small rocket production and 3D printing design by separated groups in the laboratories of Beijing No.35 High School under the guidance of their teachers and mentors. Full play to their imagination, creativity and artistic expression will be given to designing a scientific, innovative and practical work to meet the final awards. While science teachers will have discussion and exchanges on innovation of science education for young people.
