On August 24, nearly 40 experts, including 13 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), headed for Hami and Aksu in Xinjiang to carry out the annual investigations. This year's investigation activity is mainly focused on the researches of the comprehensive exploitation and utilization of the coal and coal-bed gas and on the comprehensive energy bases in Xinjiang.

During the investigation tour, the experts will also give science popularization lectures to the local officials. He Zuoxiu, a CAS academician, will give lecture in Khotan and Urumqi. The main leaders in Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region will also participate in the discussions with the experts and listen to the feedbacks of the investigation.

In August of 2005, the annual meeting of China Association for Science and Technology was held in Urumqi, capital city of Xinjiang. At the talkfest of the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wang Lequan, member of Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPC and the Secretary of the Xinjiang CPC Committee hoped to establish a mechanism of the long-term cooperation between Xinjiang and the country's scientific and technological experts taking this annual meeting as the bridge and ligament. After the completion of this annual meeting, the autonomous region decided to invite academicians and experts every year to develop the theme scientific and technological activities with clear characteristics in Xinjiang and develop the special survey and research, consultation and argumentation closely around the important and key issues in the development of the local science, technology, economy and society, so as to promote the combination of the science and technology and economic construction, promote the transformation of the scientific and technological achievements forward to the real production capacity and promote the popularization of the scientific and technological knowledge in order to provide services for the local economic and social development.

Under the supports of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Association for Science and Technology, the Xinjiang Association for Science and Technology had invited more than 200 experts, including more than 30 academicians, to develop the investigation and research at Yili, Aksu, Turpan and Shihezi, and signed a number of scientific and technological agreements. After discussion, the theme of the experts' investigation activity this year is set as "the researches on the comprehensive exploitation and utilization of the coal and coal-bed gas and on the comprehensive energy bases in Xinjiang."
