Chen Yuntai receives AGU International Award
Recently the American Geophysical Union (AGU) announced that Chen Yuntai, a Chinese geophysicist, wins the 2010 AGU International Award. Prof. Chen Yuntai is the first Chinese scientist who has been given the Award.

The AGU International Award is to recognize an individual scientist or a small team for making an outstanding contribution to furthering the Earth and space sciences and using science for the benefit of society in less favored nations, which is presented to one awardee (individual, group, or team) annually.

Chen Yuntai, a Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made outstanding contributions in the theory of seismic waves and seismic source, and also in the research on digital seismology. He has integrated the theoretical research with the practice of prevention and disaster reduction in China, which deepens people’s understanding of the cause and prediction of earthquakes, and the reduction of disasters, especially the research on seismic origin process of tremendous earthquake in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Chen Yuntai has hold positions in several international scientific organizations. As the Executive Member of IUGG in two consecutive terms, he has been dedicated in promoting the interdisciplinary research on earth science and international cooperation over the years, making great contributions in propelling the international cooperation in geophysics.

The 2010 AGU International Award will be presented at AGU Fall Meeting to be held in San Francisco, California, USA on Dec. 15th, 2010.
