The Chinese Optical Society (COS) was founded in 1979 with Wang Daheng as its President. The second Council was elected by the representatives of the members all over the country and Wang Daheng was elected president. The third and the fourth Council were elected through correspondence in 1989 and 1993, with Wang Daheng and Mu Guoguang as president respectively. The fifth and sixth Council were elected respectively in 2000 and 2006 by the representatives of the members all over the country, with Mu Guoguang the fifth president and Zhou Bingkun the sixth.

At present the Society has 17 specialized committees and 7 working committees with more than 15,000 individual members. Ever since the founding of the COS, it has established close relationships with the major international organizations. In 1987, COS became a member of the International Commission for Optics (ICO) and established a long-term cooperation with the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) and formed the Chinese Optical Society-- the International Society for Optical Engineering, initiated as COS—SPIE.
