CAST and its member societies run 1,090 STM journals, counting for one fifth of all STM journals in China. These journals cover fields of sciences, technology, medicine, and etc. which are important resources for publishing and academic exchanges.

CAST has committed itself to consolidating and improving the supporting system for STM journals, aiming to develop a group of top level journals in the world. At present, CAST is leading the implementation of the phase II of the Project for Enhancing International Impact of China STM Journals, in which it is working in close collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering has selected 105 journals with the biggest potential for international development to award with subsidies, and 20 new English journals are to be created every year so as to fill the gap in English publishing in some scientific disciplines. The project is designed to lead and demonstrate for the development of STM journals in China. Efforts are spent on promoting journals in Chinese language as well, by encouraging learned societies to better serve their members via STM journals and take advantage of their expertise in varied disciplines. Among these journals, 16 were chosen to give support, which represent disciplines either at the frontier or with high ranking research capacity but without a good journal in it. A new initiative is to recognize excellence in scientific papers published on Chinese journals, with the purpose of increasing the influence of STM journals in research work.

CAST has also been working actively on improving the academic assessment system, changing the environment for STM journals’ development, providing exchange and collaboration platforms for STM journals, laying greater emphasis on infrastructure and talents and providing fundamental service for perfecting the supporting system of Chinese journals and for make full use of STM journals’ advantages in publishing scientific findings, academic exchanges, training and fostering professional talents.
