The 2017 Backbones of the Motherland Festival kicks off

The 2017 Backbones of the Motherland Festival kicked off in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqong on May 18. The festival is a theatrical project for promoting contemporary Chinese master scientists in university campuses sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the Ministry of Education, the Communist Youth League Central Committee, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Shang Yong, executive vice president and chief executive secretary of CAST, and leaders from the Communist Youth League Central Committee, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Tsinghua university, Nankai university, Xiamen University, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), and other institutions, attended the launching ceremony.

Shang Yong said at the ceremony that starting from this year, May 30 will be designated as the National Scientific and Technological Workers' Day, during which science and technology professionals of the whole nation will celebrate their festival through various kinds of activities, including this Backbones of the Motherland Festival. He pointed out that the joint performance today will be a showcase of glorious life and stories of nine national hero from science and technology community, including Deng Jiaxian, Qian Xuesen, Li Siguang, Mao Yisheng, Zhu Kezhen, Chen Jingrun, Tang Aoqing, Yang Shixian and Luo Yang, and will help promote the spirit of Chinese scientists of loyalty to the country, pioneering, integrity, and hard dedication. He hoped that the universities will keep this activity going on.

After the ceremony, teachers and students of Tsinghua university presented Malan Flowers Are Blossoming, a drama they had created and performed about the story of Deng Jiaxian, the famous Chinese nuclear physicist who had hidden in the Gobi desert with anonymity of "Malan Flower" for 28 years for developing China's atomic and hydrogen bombs..

Since its initiation in 2012, Backbones of the Motherland has been successively organized with active participation from 12 universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Jiaotong University, and etcs.  Teachers and students respectively set scientists Wang Xuan, Deng Jiaxian, Mao Yisheng and other model scientists as theme for the theatrical performance. With admiration and reverence to these master scientists, the participating institutions shape the scientists' image on the stage delicately, which also bring university campuses and their cities a bright name card.

The joint performance activities will last from May 18 to June 9, with "Malan Flower Bloom" (Deng Jiaxian) (Tsinghua university), "Qian Xueshen" (Shanghai Jiaotong University), "Light of the Earth"(Li Siguang) (China university of Geosciences (Wuhan)), and others of nine plays performed respectively in Chongqing colleges and universities.
