Prof. Yuan Yaxiang  pointed out in his opening remarks that in recent years, the mathematics has made a great progress in developing countries. In order to further promote mathematical exchanges and cooperation among the BRICS countries, CMS advocates the establishment of a Core Committee which consists of presidents of mathematical societies from the five countries. The Core Committee has 9 members, including Yuan Yaxiang and Zhang Pingwen from China. In order to make good preparation for the BRICS Mathematician Conference, the Core Committee established the Academic Committee, which consists of fifteen delegates from five countries. They are top experts in the field of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and probability statistics. Yuan Yaxiang hoped to strengthen the cooperation and exchanges of the five countries in the field of mathematics through the Conference, to promote cultural exchanges and friendship among the BRICS countries.

Professor Daya Reddy said that the five countries have many common goals in education and scientific research. The development of mathematics is one of the important driving forces of industry and economic development. At present, the developing countries, including the BRICS countries, have become an important part in the field of mathematics. There are more and more eminent mathematicians in the BRICS countries, and the cooperation among mathematicians is getting closer. The first BRICS Mathematician Conference strengthened the mathematical exchanges and cooperation among the five countries as well as played a boosting role in promoting the development of various branches of mathematics.

The 1st BRICS Mathematics Conference invited a total of 15 plenary speakers. They are Pavel Plotnikov, Communication Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, Researcher of Lavrentiev Hydrodynamics Institute; Igor Petrov, Communication Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, Researcher of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology; V. A. Vatutin, Communication Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, Researcher of Steklov Mathematical Institute; Rob Morris, Researcher from IMPA Institute of Brazil; Frederic Valentin, Professor from LNCC University of Brazil; Benilton de Sa Carvalho, Professor from UNICAMP University of Brazil; Mahan MJ, Researcher from Indian Tata Institute of Fundamental Research-CAM; K. Sandeep, Researcher from Indian Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay; Debasis Kundu, Researcher from IIT Kanpur Institute, India; Professor Daya Reddy of the University of Cape Town of South Africa, President-elect of ICSU; Jamshid Moori, Vice President of the South African Mathematical Society, Professor from North-west University of South Africa; Peng Shige, Academician from Shandong University of China; Sun Binyong, Researcher from the Institute of Mathematics and Systems Sciences, CAS; Bao Gang, Professor from Zhejiang University of China etc. They made keynote speeches on special subjects during the conference respectively.

As one of the member societies of CAST, the Chinese Mathematical Society provided a high-level and multi-level academic exchange platform for researchers in the field of mathematics by convening the BRICS Mathematics Conference. It also played a positive role in promoting the development of the discipline, leading scientific and technological innovation and boosting the construction of national innovation system. BRICS is an important force in global science and technology innovation, whose contribution to the world's science and technology has become increasingly prominent, and whose cooperation in the field of science and technology are increasingly closer. The BRICS Mathematics Conference will be held on a regular basis among the five countries in rotation and the next conference will be held in Brazil in July of 2018.
