2017-11-20

Recently, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP23) was held in Bonn, Germany. On behalf of China Association for Science and Technology, the CAST Working Group for UN Consultation attended the conference and successfully hosted a side event on "Future Climate and Environmental Change along the Millennium Silk Road".

Since China put forward the "Belt and Road Initiative", it has received wide attention and positive response from the international community. With "Future Climate and Environmental Change along the Millennium Silk Road" as its theme, the CAST side event was chaired by Dong Wenjie, member of the Working Group for UN Environment Consultation - China Association for Science and Technology (WGUNEC-CAST) and professor of the School of Atmospheric Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University. Zhou Tianjun, secretary general of the WGUNEC-CAST and research fellow at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Zhu Jiang, director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of CAS, and Chen Xi, vice president of Xinjiang Association for Science and Technology, member of Chinese National Committee for Future Earth, and research fellow at Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of CAS, delivered reports on the side event. Based on the study on the climate and environment along the Silk Road and the gap between the formulation and implementation of the target plan for carbon emission reduction, the international cooperation between China and Central Asia over studies on the climate and environment along the Silk Road and from the perspective of economic development, climate, extreme weather disasters and risks, they shared research results and elaborated on China's position. The experts at the conference had a question-and-answer session, exchanged views on data sharing, basic scientific research on climate change, mitigation and adaptation, international cooperation and talent training, and called for international cooperation to promote common development.

The success of the side event demonstrated China's efforts and contributions in the field of climate change along the "Belt and Road", strengthened academic exchanges and promoted cooperation on development with an effort to predict the future climate and environmental changes in the countries and regions along the "Belt and Road" and jointly reduce possible future climate risks and disasters through international cooperation. The side event attracted the attention of representatives of all countries and laid an important foundation for more international cooperation in the future.

The working group held an exhibition during the conference, displaying China's important role in the development and application of supercomputer in the study of climate change. On November 7th, the working group attended the China Pavilion at the conference on invitation.
