WFEO is an international, non-governmental organization representing the engineering professionals worldwide. Founded in 1968 by a group of regional engineering organizations, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) brought together national engineering organizations from some 90 nations and represents more than 30 million engineers from around the world under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) in Paris. CAST joined the WFEO as a national member in 1981. CAST founded the WFEO-CHINA in 1988 in order to enhance China’s influence and power of discourse in the international science and technology arena.
Wu Haiying, executive secretary of CAST, delivered a focus speech. Wu said that international organizations played an important role in the global governance, and were an important body to promote the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative as well as a community with a shared future for mankind.
“CAST has joined seven important international scientific and technological organizations on behalf of China by now. Chinese scientists have served as vice presidents or higher positions in six international scientific and technological organizations, including the WFEO-CHINA, based on the recommendation of CAST.” she acknowledged.
WFEO is the most important engineering non-governmental organization that CAST joined. Gong became president-elect of the WFEO in 2017, and will take up the post of president in 2019.
“This is the first time that a Chinese scientist will take up the position, which will bring opportunities for us to participate in the global governance of engineering even more actively and play a major role,” she said.
Wu urged that all members of WFEO-CHINA play a positive role in the international arena, promote exchanges and cooperation in science and technology, and contribute to the construction of a new platform for international cooperation and common development.

Prof. Wang Qinglin, deputy director general of the Department of International Affairs of CAST, gave a presentation to recount the status and working progress of CAST participating in WFEO.
Gong Ke also gave a keynote speech entitled “The Work of WFEO in 2018”. He said that WFEO had a characteristic of representing large regions of engineering community at global strategic level from multi-nationals. It also provided a window for Chinese engineering community to get involved in the global governance in engineering fields.
“The new WFEO Engineering 2030 Plan emphasizes the role of engineers and engineering practice in promoting the sustainable development of science, technology and social economy. The plan has combined the development of WFEO with the UN sustainable development agenda,” Gong said in his speech.
According to the plan, WFEO will pay more attention to the cooperation with industry, promote technological innovation and provide engineering solutions for the sustainable development goal of the United Nations.
The vice president of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific, Huang Wei, secretary-general of the WFEO Committee on Engineering for Innovative Technologies, Lin Runhua, and secretary-general of WFEO-CHINA, Qin Jiuyi, also gave their speeches.
President-elect of WFEO and member of the Honor Committee of CAST Gong Ke presided in the meeting.
