On July 4, 2018, the first General Assembly of the newly established International Science Council (ISC) was held in Paris, France. Prof. Li Jinghai, vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and president of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), was elected vice president of the ISC from 6 candidates for a term of 2018-2021.
As a vice president of the ICS, Li will work with the international science community to promote the integration of natural sciences and social sciences to jointly meet global challenges. Li’s election will help to promote China's participation in global science governance and enhance the leading role of Chinese scientists internationally, meaning that China will play a better role in the international science community.
The ISC, formed by the merger of the former International Council for Science (ICSU) and the former International Council for Social Sciences (ISSC), is the world’s largest comprehensive science organization with the widest coverage of members and disciplines in the world, enjoying a strong appeal in the international science community. The ISC currently has 143 member organizations, 39 member unions and associations and 31 affiliated members. Li was elected vice president of ICSU in 2014.
