Feng is to succeed Jean-Louis Briaud as president on July 15, and will serve for four years.
FedIGS is an umbrella organization linking international professional societies in the field of engineering geology, rock mechanics and soil mechanics, serving to build an international platform for groups to cooperate.
FedIGS was jointly launched by four international organizations: the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM), the International Geosynthetics Society, and the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment. All four are current members of the federation, and members of the FedIGS presidium include the current presidents, their immediate predecessors and secretaries-general of the member organizations.
During his term as president of the ISRM from 2011 to 2015, Feng pushed forward the reform and innovation of the international organization and made fruitful efforts to advance the theory and technique of rock mechanics. As a recognition of his accomplishments, the ISRM awarded Feng the tile of ISRM Fellow in 2017. His subsequent work on the presidium of the FedIGS has also been widely recognized in the international community.
