The 2018 edition of an initiative called "Backbones of the People's Republic of China – On-campus Publicity of Outstanding Scientists" was launched at Nanjing University, eastern China's Jiangsu province on Oct. 20, 2018.
The initiative was co-sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the Ministry of Education, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and jointly organized by the Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology, Jiangsu Provincial Education Department, Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, the Nanjing Branch of the CAS and Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Social Sciences.
Also launched on the occasion were Jiangsu province's educational activities to promote scientific integrity and foster a right style of learning.
Under the initiative, nine universities including Tsinghua University will stage 27 shows in Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Yangzhou, Nantong and Huai'an, all cities in Jiangu from Oct. 20 to 30.
Targeting young students and science workers, the shows will present the brilliant life and moving stories of nine national heroes of China who have made huge contributions to the country's scientific cause, namely Li Siguang, Zhu Kezhen, Qian Xuesen, Deng Jiaxian, Mao Yisheng, Yang Shixian, Shi Changxu, Huang Danian and Luo Yang.
Huai Jinpeng, executive vice president of CAST, Wang Yanwen, head of publicity of CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee, and Zhang Yibin, secretary of CPC Nanjing University Committee attended and spoke at the launching ceremony.
Stressing that youth is the hope of a country and the future of a nation, Huai said that the initiative is designed to cultivate the right values among young students and teachers and shape their characters.
As this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up and next year the 70th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China, Huai urged youths of the new era to better serve China's efforts of becoming a science and technology giant and the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation by studying hard, being of good moral character and carrying on the good qualities of Chinese scientists of being patriotic, innovative, truth-seeking, cooperative and keen to cultivate talents.
Wang Yanwen extended congratulations on the launching of the initiative on behalf of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Jiangsu Provincial People's Government.
Appreciating scientists as a key force in national development and scientific spirit a precious treasure for national progress, Wang urged Jiangsu's science workers as well as college teachers and students to learn from scientists their patriotic spirit, aspiration to scale new heights in scientific research and selfless dedication to work.
The opening drama of this year's edition was Light of Geology, a play produced and performed by China University of Geosciences (Wuhan).
He Guangcai, secretary of the CPC committee of the university, gave an introduction about the drama.
Based on the life of renowned Chinese geologist Li Siguang (1889-1971), the play was staged immediately after the launching ceremony. It gave a true-to-life depiction of Li as a patriotic, truth-seeking, responsible and dedicated scientist in the hope that the audiences will be impressed by the devotional characteristic of Chinese scientists illustrated by Li to work for the prosperity, national renewal, social progress and people's happiness of China.
The launching ceremony was presided over by CAST vice president Xu Yanhao and also gathered academicians Fang Cheng, Chen Hongyuan, Wu Peiheng, Zhu Shining and Rui Xiaoting of the CAS as well as Sun Chunlei, vice president of the Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology.
Started in 2012, the initiative has seen the production of 14 stage plays shown 340 times, accumulatively received over 500,000 audiences and appreciated by young students.
Almost 100 excellent science workers, including representatives of winners of the National Innovation Award and the China Youth Science and Technology Award and delegates to the Ninth CAST National Congress, and representatives of the Ministry of Education, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, the CAS, the CAE, relevant departments of Jiangsu and Nanjing governments and universities offering and hosting the performances also attended the launching ceremony and watched the opening drama.
