The 13th Internet Governance Forum of the United Nations took place in the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris from November 12 to 14, 2018.
Revolving around the theme “Internet of Trust,” the forum dealt with such hot topics as cybersecurity and governance, emerging technologies and sustainable development.
The China Association for Science and Technology Consultative Committee on UN Information Technology ( CAST CCIT) sent a delegation to the forum where it successfully hosted the “Big Data Governance for Paris Agreement and SDGs” subforum and co-hosted three other subforums with Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza (the Digital Italy Institution from the Prime Minister of Italy), France’s Orange company and the National Information Technology Council of Nepal respectively.
The subforums explored the important role of new-generation information technologies in the development of human society from the perspectives of open data, internet governance and sustainable development and participants called on different countries to embrace the technological revolution and share its fruits.
The CAST delegation also used the opportunity to disseminate China’s efforts and contributions to the world regarding internet governance and construction of an information society and showcase China’s evolving scientific and technological strength.
In addition, the delegation set up a stand at the forum venue to exhibit its consultative work, which attracted over 100 representatives of various international organizations including president of the Internet Association of Kazakhstan Shavkat Sabirov and IEEE Internet Initiative chairman Deepak Maheshwari.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs official Guo Weimin made special visits to the stand to gain a better understanding of the exhibition as well as the work of CAST.
This year’s edition was the most special in the forum’s history in that it received the highest treatment from the UN and the host country. UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron both addressed the forum. Besides, the forum, together with the Paris Peace Forum and the GovTech Summit, were the opening events of the Paris Digital Week-2018, the first time for the forum to be included in a series of events of a host country.
