CAST announces 2024 top 10 science, engineering, and industrial challenges

The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) held a meeting for the final review of 2024 top 10 science, engineering and industrial challenges on June 14, 2024.


The meeting was presided over by Wan Gang, President of CAST and Director of the academic committee for the final round of review.


The academic committee, composed of 30 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), evaluated all the entities considering their scientific frontier standing, guidance role, innovativeness and strategic significance.


After rounds of strict evaluations and anonymous votes, 30 entities came to the final list.


Meng Qinghai, Executive Vice President and Secretary of the Secretariat of CAST, attended the meeting.


While noting that China is striding forward in the journey of building the nation’s strength in science and technology, Wan Gang stressed that in the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, we must foster new quality productive forces and enhance our core competitiveness through the development of science and technology, the cultivation of talent, and innovative initiatives.


With the aim of guiding Chinese sci-tech professionals to keep up with the global trend of sci-tech development and meeting the nation’s major needs, CAST initiated the program of soliciting top 10 science, engineering, and industrial challenges each year since 2018 to encourage Chinese sci-tech professionals to conduct original research and advance scientific development.


Since the launch of the program in 2024, a total of 597 projects recommended by 102 institutions participated in this year’s event.


After preliminary review by an expert group composing of 10 experts from different fields, 60 entities were selected for the final review.
