UN STI Forum holds 2024 Leveraging Open Science for Sustainable Development in the Global South side event

The CAST-UN Consultative Committee on Open Science and Global Partnership (CCOS), together with Zhejiang University and the CAST-UN Consultative Committee on Women Scientists and Gender Equality and Solidarity jointly hosted an online side event at the 9th UN Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum) themed "Leveraging Open Science for Sustainable Development Goals in the Global South" on May 9, 2024 Beijing time.


Over 500 experts from international organizations, research institutes, publishing houses, and other institutions attended the meeting.


The meeting was presided over by Yang Wei, Honorary Member of CAST,  President of the CCOS Special Committee and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).


Navid Hanif, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), addressed the opening ceremony.


Lidia Arthur Brito, Assistant Director-general for Natural Sciences of UNESCO, Youngsuk Chi, President of Elsevier Group, Niels Peter Thomas, Managing Director of Books at Springer Nature, Wang Jian, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and Founder of Alibaba Cloud, Chen Zijiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Professor of Shandong University, Mohamed-Slim Alouini, Distinguished Professor of King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST), and Li Min, Secretary General of CCOS Special Committee and Professor at Zhejiang University, delivered keynote speeches respectively around topics of eradication of extreme poverty, eradicating hunger and the partnership for realizing UN goals, and engaged in a lively dialogue on open science for promoting sustainable development in Global South.



Under the theme of "Science, technology and innovation for reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions", the STI Forum was held from May 9-10, 2024 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States to promote cooperation in science, technology and innovation in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
