WG UNEC-CAST holds side event at COP 29 to find Smart Pathway to Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

Under the theme of "Smart Pathway to Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation," the Working Group for UN Environment Consultation-China Association for Science and Technology (WG UNEC-CAST) convened a side event in a hybrid form of online and on-spot at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP 29, on November 18, 2024, Beijing time.


Under the theme of "Smart Pathway to Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation," the Working Group for UN Environment Consultation-China Association for Science and Technology (WG UNEC-CAST) convenes a hybrid side event, blending online and in-person attendance at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference on November 18, 2024, Beijing time.


Representatives from government departments, research institutions, universities, corporations, non-governmental organizations, and various other sectors were among the hundreds who attended the conference.


The session was presided over by Professor Dong Wenjie, Secretary-General of the WG UNEC-CAST and Dean of the School of Atmospheric Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University.


Distinguished attendees included Xu Xiaofeng, President and researcher from the China Meteorological Service Association; Jiang Tong, professor from the Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology; Zhang Qianggong, researcher from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Jason Blake Cohen, professor from the China University of Mining and Technology; Xu Yinlong, researcher from the Institute of Agricultural Environment and Sustainable Development at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS); He Yong, researcher from the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture at the CAAS; Dong Gill Kim, associate professor from the Hawasa University; Meng Xianhong, researcher from the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources at the CAS; Cai Yinyin, Executive Deputy Director from the Shenzhen Institute of Meteorological Innovation, and Su Buda, professor from the Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology.


Over 10 experts and scholars engaged in a dialogue focused on the impacts of climate change, as well as strategies for adaptation and mitigation.

The conference concluded with remarks from Dr. Hiroaki Shibuya, Deputy Director of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN).

Centered around the theme "In Solidarity for a Green World," the COP 29 took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11-22, 2024.


The conference agenda encompassed a range of critical issues, including climate financing, technological innovation, nationally determined contributions, global adaptation goals, and the pressing matter of loss and damage.


It brought together leaders, climate experts, representatives from international agencies and civil society organizations from around the globe to strategize and chart a course of action to combat climate change.
