China urges collective global action on climate change at COP29
In recent years, the increasing frequency of extreme weather events has posed significant challenges for global climate governance. From November 11 to 22, 2024, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change took place in Baku, Azerbaijan. The conference, carrying the hopes of the international community--particularly those of developing nations--brought government representatives, climate scientists, and civil society members together to address the escalating climate crisis.
On November 12 and 13, Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang attended the World Leaders Climate Action Summit during COP29 as the special representative of President Xi Jinping and delivered an address.
Ding stressed the importance of global cooperation on tackling climate change, urging the international community to accelerate the energy transition in an equitable, orderly, and just manner. He highlighted the need to stabilize the industrial and supply chains of new energy, enhance the accessibility and innovation of green technologies and products, and foster high-quality productive forces more rapidly. Financing and technology, Ding noted, were critical for strengthening global capacity to combat climate change. He also called on developed countries to increase financial support and technology transfers to developing nations, emphasizing China’s commitment to collaborating with all parties to promote the vision of a global community of shared future. Ding underscored the necessity of collective efforts to safe-guard Earth as a common home and to work toward a clean and beautiful world.
On November 18, the CAST Working Group for the UN Environment Committee organized a COP29 side event titled “Smart Pathway to Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation.” The event, held in collaboration with the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IESEA) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), brought experts from around the globe together to discuss key topics such as extreme climate events, climate risk management, adaptation technologies, climate change indicators, regional responses, and intelligent forecasting of extreme weather.
Dong Wenjie, Secretary-General of the CAST Working Group for the UN Environment Committee and Dean of the School of Atmospheric Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University, emphasized the critical importance of addressing climate change. He highlighted that tackling this pressing global challenge requires not only scientific and technological innovation but also enhanced international collaboration and resource sharing.
Hiroaki Shibuya, Deputy Director of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), encouraged participants to translate the outcomes of the discussions into concrete actions, underscoring the need to contribute to the ongoing improvement of global climate governance.
