Enhancing young engineers’ ability to monetize soft skills is crucial for improving their global competence (By Kancheepuram Gunalan)

On the afternoon of October 13, 2025, during the “Capacity Building for Women and Young Engineers” session at the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) 2025 General Assembly, Mr. Kancheepuram Gunalan, Chair of the WFEO-UN Relations Committee (WURC), stated:

“Enhancing young engineers’ ability to monetize soft skills is crucial for improving their global competence. By acquiring soft skills beyond science, engineering, and technology—including intellectual property, economics and trade, and specific business knowledge—and integrating these skills into their ‘toolbox’ through training, they can better drive technological and social innovation.”

The WFEO 2025 General Assembly and the Global Engineering Congress were held from October 12 to 17. Co-hosted by the WFEO, the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Shanghai municipal government, it aims to facilitate in-depth exchange and cooperation within the global engineering community. The event is part of a series of activities organized for the CAST International Month 2025: Openness, Cooperation, Trust.
