Building a new type of power system requires joint efforts from the global scientific and industrial communities
On September 24, the 17th International Conference on Power System Technology (PowerCon 2025) opened in Hefei, Anhui Province. The conference is part of the CAST International Month 2025: Openness, Cooperation, Trust.
In his opening address at the conference, Shu Yinbiao, Chairman of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE), member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the 36th President of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), pointed out that the new type of power system is one primarily based on clean energy and is characterized by three distinct features: a diversified power source structure, interactive power supply and demand, and intelligent operation and control. However, as the proportion of new energy continues to increase, challenges urgently needing solutions have emerged in areas such as resource adequacy, security, and economic efficiency.
He stated that building this new type of power system is a complex systemic project. It requires the global scientific and industrial communities to work together to engage in collaborative innovation. Efforts must be made to continuously deepen fundamental theoretical research, enhance risk resilience, improve market mechanisms, and strengthen international cooperation. Focusing on key technologies such as new energy grid integration, advanced and efficient power transmission, system security and stability control, long-duration energy storage, and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), it is crucial to bolster scientific research and development, and the translation of technological achievements into practical applications.
