Javier García Martínez, president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), delivered a video speech.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Fan Qinghua, vice president and secretary general of the CCS.
In his speech, He Junke noted that the CCS has a long history and profound foundation, and has shaped a model and set a benchmark for first-class academic societies. He hoped the CCS would take its responsibilities and gather powerful forces to build China into a country strong in science and technology.
He put forward 4 requirements to national societies:
--To take responsibilities to serve as bridges and make efforts to cultivate a culture advocating innovation, and carry forward the Spirit of Chinese Scientists to establish a common ideology of staying unified and working hard.
--To keep in mind President Xi Jinping’s instructions at the Symposium with scientists in 2020, and stride forward to target the global sci-tech frontiers, serve the main economic battlefields, fulfill the significant needs of the country and benefit people's lives and health. We should make efforts to address fundamental issues that constrain industrial and technological development, and build high-level academic exchange system and public service platforms to promote in-depth integration of industry, academia, and research institutions to consolidate the foundation of quality-oriented development.
--To deepen the reform of academic societies and promote modernization of governance. We should make efforts to explore new paths and models for the governance effectiveness and build first-class academic societies with Chinese characteristics.
--To expand open cooperation and get integrated into global innovation system to draw a blueprint for the development of academic societies from global perspectives.
In his speech, Wan Lijun reviewed the historic development of the CCS and briefed about the society’s remarkable achievements in guiding the academic circles over the past 90 years.
Wan urged the participants to focus on national strategies and prioritize scientific research to meet the needs of the people and the nation.
