• CSTM holds special exhibition to commemorate Nicolaus Copernicus

    A special exhibition -- “The 550th Anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus' birth: The man who moved the earth” -- opened at the China Science and Technology Museum (CSTM) on November 16, 2023, which is guided by the Chinese Association of Natural Science Museums (CANSM), and co-sponsored by the China Science and Technology Museum (CSTM) and the Ptolemy Museum. The Cultural Office of the Polish Embassy in China gives good supports to the event.


    Cheng Donghong, president of the CANSM, Yin Hao, secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and director of the CSTM, and Jakub Kumoch, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to China, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches respectively.


    Copernicus raised the heliocentric theory which overturned the traditional human worldview, and opened the prelude to the scientific revolution to pave the way for modern scientific system.


    2023 marks the 550th anniversary of Copernicus' birth and the 480th anniversary of the publication of his masterpiece -- Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies.


    The exhibition showcased life-long stories of the great astronomer and his marvelous masterpiece.


    The exhibition includes 3 parts: The birth of genius, The book telling about moving the earth, and The Copernicus revolution, presenting respectively the life of Copernicus, the publication of his masterpiece, and the influence of his heliocentric theory in the history of science.


    The most eye-catching part of the exhibition include an original edition of the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies published in 1566 and some precious copies of Copernican manuscripts.


    The exhibition creates spherical spaces that embody the concept of heliocentrism, Copernicus’ Observatory, and other scenarios, activating the curiosity of the visitors to make further exploration.


    The exhibition is open to the public for free until December 31, 2023 with multiple fascinating expert lectures.
