The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) held a seminar to promote its Young Elite Scientist Sponsorship Program (YESS) on June 5-11 at the China Business Executives Academy in Dalian (CBEAD), a specific action following President Xi Jinping’s instructions on talent cultivation in the new era.

The seminar was included in the training program of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). CAST was entrusted to screen out 54 young sci-tech professionals to participate in the seminar.

Zhang Guihua, member of the leading Party members group and executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST, attended the event and exchanged views with the participants.

The seminar invited 10 experts to deliver lectures.

Qiu Zhiming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and an expert in shipborne weapon system and application engineering, delivered a lecture focusing on carrying forward the spirit of scientists and craftsmanship to build the nation solid security defense. Qiu elaborated major achievements and connotation of China's defense science and technology.

Xiang Changle, academician of the CAE and secretary of the Party Committee of Dalian University of Technology, delivered a lecture about consolidating the higher education foundation to build China a country strong in science and technology. Xiang delved into the historical mission of research universities in the new era.

Fan Daiming, academician of the CAE and former president of the Air Force Medical University, and Ye Cong, member of the Standing Committee of CAST and deputy director of the China Ship Scientific Research Center (CSSC), shared their own scientific research experiences and insights on serving the nation through science and technology.

Gao Ruiping, member of the leading Party members group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), delivered a lecture on how the NSFC helps young sci-tech professionals scale up scientific peaks. Gao encouraged young scientists and technologists to make original innovation and serve the nation’s innovation-driven development strategy.

Many academicians and experts, including professors from the Party School of the Central Committee of CPC, the National Defense University PLA China, and Renmin University of China, delivered lectures at the seminar.

Besides on-site lectures, the seminar provided group discussions, digital curriculum, play clubs, and visit tours to patriotic education bases and manufacturing bases of major sci-tech facilities and infrastructures.

The event inspired the participants’ passion for scientific research for the nation and broadened their horizons in academic world. They expressed their willingness of staying committed to achieving the goal of high-level sci-tech reliance and strength.
