UN Hosts Meeting on AI Capacity-Building Cooperation, Co-sponsored by China and Zambia
Co-sponsored by the Chinese and Zambian permanent missions to the UN and the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), a side event of the Group of Friends for International Cooperation on AI Capacity-Building was held at the UN headquarters in New York on May 6, 2025.

The event was attended by over 100 representatives from more than 70 countries and international organizations. Fu Cong, Chinese ambassador to the UN, Luo Hui, Executive Secretary of the leading Party members group, and the ambassadors of Zambia, Costa Rica, and Spain, as well as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Deputy Secretary-General, addressed the meeting.
Fu Cong stated that China has long championed and actively engaged in international AI capacity-building cooperation. China will continue to embrace principles of beneficial use, equity, inclusiveness, and collaborative governance in advancing global AI governance and cooperation.
Luo Hui highlighted that China's sci-tech community leverages AI to drive high-quality development while safeguarding cultural diversity in the AI era. The CAST actively responds to the Global Initiative on AI Governance, encouraging Chinese and international tech experts to engage in open dialogues to reach consensus and support developing countries in enhancing their AI capabilities.
Zambian Ambassador Milambo noted that genuine partnerships are crucial for AI capacity-building. The Group of Friends aims to promote inclusive AI development and ensure everyone benefits from technological progress.
Professor Gong Ke, former WFEO president, and Academician Liu He from the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration & Development, presented their practical AI application cases.
Representatives from various countries actively participated in the discussion, and called for a cooperation framework to achieve a future of shared AI benefits.
