322 Chinese universities see 2,441 engineering programs accredited

2025-12-26

Beijing, December 20 -- A total of 2,441 engineering programs at 322 regular higher-education institutions across China have now earned national accreditation, the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association (CEEAA) announced in its updated register released this week.

The programmes span 24 engineering sub-disciplines—from mechanical and instrumentation engineering to emerging interdisciplinary fields.

The CEEAA, a constituent member of both the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the newly formed Chinese Society of Engineers (CSE), has coordinated the reviews.

The CAST, China’s representative to the Washington Accord since 2016, has provided sustained support for the accreditation drive, which educators credit with raising the quality of undergraduate engineering training and sharpening universities’ focus on outcome-based education.

At the 2023 International Engineering Alliance Meeting (IEAM 2023), all signatories of the Washington Accord unanimously approved CAST’s periodic review, keeping China’s accreditation system in full standing and paving the way for future negotiations on mutual recognition of professional competence under other IEA agreements.

The CAST Center for Professional Training and Services, which oversees capacity-building for reviewers and university faculty, said the next accreditation cycle will place greater emphasis on student innovation, sustainability and international teamwork competencies.
