Beijing, July 11 – A new global alliance on carbon-capture technology was launched in China’s capital city Beijing on Thursday, bringing together companies, universities and research institutes from a dozen countries to accelerate the roll-out of projects that could help rein in climate change.

The International Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage Technology Innovation & Cooperation Organization (ICTO) was inaugurated at a founding assembly attended by Sinopec President Hou Qijun, China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) international affairs Director General Luo Hui and UNESCO’s East-Asia Director Shahbaz Khan.

Sinopec, China’s top refiner, and the state-backed The Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China (CIESC) spearheaded the initiative. Founding members already span China, the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, Germany and Kazakhstan, among others.

Ma Yongsheng, former Sinopec Chair and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), was elected ICTO’s first President.

The non-profit body will draft global standards, lobby for supportive policies and broker joint research projects. It also plans training schemes for young scientists and a platform to turn laboratory breakthroughs into commercial-scale carbon-capture plants.

By fusing science, industry and talent, the ICTO aims to become a think-tank engine, a transfer hub and a talent forge for CCUS worldwide, framing the effort as part of a community with a shared future for tackling climate change.
